Campaign for marking the International Day against drug consumption and illegal drug traffic – 26th of June 2010

One of the enemies of the modern man is the DRUG. Gained naturally or artificially, the substances causing dreams or happiness have more victims every year than mass destroying weapons. The phenomenon of consuming either legal or illegal drugs increases day by day. If in the years after the revolution, drugs in Romania were consumed especially by young people of 25-30 years old, and only in certain areas, in the past 2 years the average age for starting to consume drugs decreased a lot, reaching 14-15 years.

We can say that the drug, alcohol, tobacco consumption phenomenon has decreased the average age of the consumer, at the same time with the increase in the number of consumers and especially of those consuming injection drugs.

“Drug consumption by the young people in Romania”, a research completed by the Romanian Organization “Save the Children”, in 2005, shows the prevalence of illegal drug consumption during life, at people of 11-18 years old, of 4,4% and that there is an increasing trend of consumption for most of the drugs.

From the analysis of the study results regarding the prevalence of illegal drug consumption in Neamt- completed in 2007 by CEPCA Neamt, it comes out that the most consumed drug among the interrogated persons, is marijuana, 4, 5% of the pupils stating they have consumed this drug at least once during their life. One increased prevalence is also registered regarding the tranquilizers consumptions without the doctor prescription, registering a 2,3% percentage for the consumption until this age. We can also notice the increased percentage of the cocaine consumption for Neamt county, of 1, 1% at a national level, regarding the tobacco, alcohol and illegal drug consumption.

The campaign “Get involved, in your community there is no place for drugs” wants to offer clear information for adolescents and youth adopting a personal attitude against drugs, so that to be useful for adults too. From the experience of other campaigns implemented on a national level by the National Drug Fighting Agency- national coordinator of the fight against illegal drug traffic and consumption, fight against this flagella, the DRUG, which, in one way or another, affects us all, has many more chances of success when the prevention activities addressed to the communities require their direct involvement. 

The international day against illegal drug consumption and traffic- 26th of June is an opportunity that, acting as partners, the state institution with the ones of the civil company act against this flagella, DRUGS, which, by their direct and indirect destroying effects and by the rapidity they  spread, represent a  major challenge for humanity.

Vulnerable people to drug consumption is the one made of adolescents and young people exposed to new, to new experiences, to the adoption of some risk behaviors, by means of some insufficient information. That is why a volunteer recruitment will be done, and they will be trained and formed by CPECA specialists and partner institutions to be able to develop prevention activities within the campaigns organized by the center. 

On Thursday, the 24th of June 2010, at 12:30, at “Curtea Domneasca” Church (in front of “Stephen the Great” Tower), in Piatra Neamt, a silence moment will be kept in memory of the victims of drug consumption and the “Drug Fight Foundation- from people to people” will be formed, with the participation of all the volunteers from all the institutions involved.

During the entire campaign, the members of the local communities will receive booklets containing information regarding risks and harmful effects of the drug consumption, posters will be posted in places frequented by youth and in the head office of public institutions.
